Each year, Istituto Svizzero hosts the archaeology departments of Swiss universities, providing a platform for work and discussion to raise the profile of Swiss archaeological research in the Mediterranean region. This year’s event, Archeom 2025, is on the 12th February in Rome and the theme is “Artificial Intelligence for Archaeology: Potential and Challenges”. Gabriele Gattiglia, Automata’s PI, will take part in the workshop with a lecture entitled “From ArchAIDE to AUTOMATA. AI applications for archaeological pottery”.
The ArchAIDE Project produced a range of tools to assist archaeologists with the identification and cataloguing of pottery sherds. These consist of:
- the knowledge-base (catalogues of pottery forms, decorations and stamps) used as reference in the pottery classification,
- the image recognition tool to classify decorations on pottery sherds,
- the shape recognition tool to identify the form to which a pottery sherd belongs to,
- the stamp search tool to identify stamps,
- the data visualisation tools to analyse origin-occurrence information collected by the project.
To support the archaeologists activities on the field, the project produced a mobile app, ARCHAIDE, which is available in the AppStore and GooglePlay.
Building on the success of ArchAIDE, AUTOMATA will be using AI and 3D digitisation to extend the facilities and scope of applications available to archaeologists for their work with the identification and classification of pottery.
